John Pirro and the News-Times fumble again

Yesterday, John Pirro, in his short and callous demeanor, finally called the family to hear the other side of the story.

And this morning the results, buried within another story related to the incident appears on the front page of the News-Times.

Examples of Pirro's poor reporting include his statement:
The Brookfield Snow's escapade briefly transformed him into something of a folk hero among some readers of the original story. They flooded the News-Times Web site with comments, many praising his audacity and noting that the approximate time of the incident, 4:20 a.m., corresponds to 420, which the online "Urban Dictionary" defines as shorthand for "the universal time to get high."
Of course, Mr. Pirro fails to mention the numerous other, thoughtful and well-written, words of support for Scott that lambast the News-Times for their terrible judgment. Of course, he wrote both articles, so that makes sense, doesn't it?

"If I were writing the article, I would purposely make it disjointed and awkward so it wouldn't bubble up. Then I would put it on the front page so no one could say they did not get equal coverage," one responder said.

Also, it should be noted that as of this time, the family is unsure of the exact time this incident took place according to the police report. Scott does not wear a watch and says he didn't know what time it was. The time at which his mother learned that Scott was arrested was 5:00 a.m. Who knows, 4:30, 4:45, those are all after 4:20, but they just don't pack that same zing, do they?

And if the prosecutors didn't already feel pressured to send Scott to jail because of the national coverage, hammering home this weak and flimsy point in the follow up story sure will help.

I have heard from many that they have already grown weary of the News-Times downhill reporting and many responses fall within the category of "not surprised".

If you're so concerned about his mental state and wellbeing why are you letting him roam the streets of Danbury at 4 in the morning?

Sorry, but if you walk into a police station smoking a blunt, you get arrested and your name is in the paper.

Anonymous - if you wanted to go ahead and re-read, the point is the way this was reported. If this showed up in the police blotter- we would not be here. Mr. Pirro editorialized in his piece and the trashy News-Times editors saw no problems with this.

This is NOT news, this is garbage. There is a stigma always working against mentally ill people. Calling them stupid and posing it as a news story does not help.

I'm not at liberty to discuss Scott's health situation with you, but I can surely tell you that Scott was not in a right state of mind - it's not like he posted bail, came home, and started talking trash to people on the Internet about subject of which he knows nothing about.

I'm tired of everyone missing the whole point of what's wrong with what the News-Times did. The fact that Scott's story highlights other social ills is a side-effect. THE PROBLEM IS: THE NEWS-TIMES DID NOT WRITE A NEWS STORY THEY WROTE AN EDITORIAL WITH HALF THE STORY PAWNED IT OFF AS NEWS, OFFENDED ANYONE WHO CARES ABOUT OR IS MENTALLY ILL AND THEN REFUSED TO OWN UP TO WHAT THEY DID.

Is that clear enough for all of you?

And, about your first question. First of all, even if there was a shred of reasonableness to what you suggest, not everyone works Monday through Friday 9-5, anonymous.

Second, tell me how you would have reacted if, at age 24, someone was trying to control your every move. Tell me how you would have reacted knowing that you are well within your legal rights to go as you please. Read the book Crazy for a good idea on how we really do wish there was something we could do - but there isn't much.

Seriously, did you even think about the logistics of your statement? I'm sorry that everyone is not independently wealthy and can't sit around doing as they wish.

And one final question, do you think living with and caring for someone who is mentally ill is easy? Do you think it's a field-day for family and friends?

This is exactly why people with no knowledge of the situation should open their mouths. At the very least, pick up a book and have some sort of idea of the situation - and then count your blessings that you do not have someone like this in your life.

Gosh, it really amazes me how cruel and callous so many people can be.

this is hilarious!
Why don't you get your boy help instead of writing this really weird blog. I guess all the stories on John Hinkley should have been about the real story, his mental health problems.
Thank God that boy didn't kill anyone. He is clearly nuts.
I think the obsessive nature of this blog indicates the writer is every bit as nutty as the guy in the cop shop.
this story has made the rounds because a nutso walked into a police station at 4:20 to smoke pot!
That is hilarious! Do you not get that?

While one kid may display anger through silently retreating to their room, another may simply be sad and still another is likely to break toys, throw a tantrum, display a fit of rage etc. Handling each situation calls for patience, understanding and pyschological balance to be maintained while dealing with an angry kid.
